From time to time I search for items that you moist certainly wont come across anywhere. We search consignment shops for designer labels, we seach the convention show floor for a new line that knocks our socks of and we listen to almost every little sales rep that comes along.

It has been discussed in the shop that gloves are really a language of their own. I thought that was a profound statement actually. Mostly because it is so true. Take for example the styles shown here. I would enjoy hearing the messages that you think these styles are telling us!

Lending a Hand this Summer

One of the reasons I named the shop HAND AND GLOVE was to display and sell hand made products by artisans around the country.

This beautifull Silk Scarf is just such an item, there is ONLY this one. You will have to call or come into the shop for this item. If you call I will send you several photos of the scarf so you can see up close how detailed it is.

And like I mentioned it's silk, it feels heavenly and the detail is truly exceptional.

The artist is Linda Pavian Roberts. Here's the kicker... Linda donates 100% of her profits to the Intercultural Resource Center in Summit County. Did you see that? 100% !

It is hand died silk, the wool is a washed and dried and applied onto the silk. It's a beautiful testiment to the femine side of fashion.

During may we had the One and Only sale to benefit the handicap at the Colorado Springs VA Hospital in the name of Dr. Larry Purvis.
We have 63 gloves to be donated! Several customers were savvy on grabbing a deal! Donating their One and Only glove and receiveing a new pair for only $35.00!
I feel good about the response as it was our first year. I am looking forward to next year, the marketing and promotions for the donation event will kick off in April while there are still skiers here in Breckenridge.
I'm sure some of you have experinced putting a good idea into motion.... !@*^!(^#??!@

Gauntlet: A very long cuff to protect the forearm.

This ladies leather glove is an excellent example of a "guantlet" style glove. It is available in the shop today but it is so popular right now not to mention I only one or two sizes left in stock.
It does come in terrific Brown too. They are "silk" lined so they are perfect for spring and fall and those areas of the country that don't get bitter cold.
Like Texas or Florida.

I have SO many people that come through from Texas and Florida and they swear it never gets "cold enough to wear gloves", however as these gloves, there are gloves that are for protection and style/fashion as much as they are for warmth.
Not to mention a person wearing gloves instantly shows that they are disctinctive, a tad bit different, a unicorn perhaps.

Fourchette: The piece of leather sewn between the fingers on some kinds of gloves. Also known as the sidewall or gusset.

This glove shows the "fourchette" in red between the fingers.

The Man that started the One and Only Sale

There is probably a fair amount of you that think a "Sale" is a Sale is a Sale.... especially in the retail world.

However this One and Only Sale was a product of meeting one of my first few customer a winter of 2008,

Where Head & Heart Walk Hand in Hand

Dr. Purvis and his wife came in looking for some gloves. After working with them both and his wife selecting a pair they purchased her gloves and left his pair. It was a difficult thing for he and I to justify the charge to him for a pair of gloves in that he only really needed one.

In winter of 2009 Dr. Purvis came back to Breckenridge and stopped by to say HI and again we went through the motions of trying to select a glove for him that he felt would meet his needs; warmth, comfort, easy to put on, and not too expensive. He selected the Sermoneta Italian suede with cashmere lined glove. Now mind you this is not a cheap glove but it looked to be the perfect glove for him.

I told him "I would give him a discount and donate the other glove to the Handicap association". That's when it all started... I'd started a box right then it kept growing throughout the year. This summer I figured was a great time to give people the chance to donate that "one and only glove" and receive a new pair at an incredible discount.

Hence The Annual Dr. Purvis One and Only Sale ~

Dr. Purvis popped in the shop just the other day to say Hi and mentioned that he "got to thinking" that the VA hospital in CO Springs would be a great place for the donation; by his mention "of course" that is where we will be later this year with the first of what I hope to be many, many gloves for the people who need them.
Please take advantage of this opportunity as I want to have an overstuffed box for the hospital.

One Smart Glove Girl

Just the other day I had one very savvy "Glove Girl" call the shop to take advantage of our

Very savvy indeed as she shipped me two single gloves that were simply black and well yes old.
I will be donating them and she took advantage of the remarkable sale here at Hand an Glove and picked up the black gloves with brass studs pictured here and a second pair also shown above, the gray or "Lapis" (as they are called on the website) glove with the purple bow for only $35.00 ea pair... Lets talk Macho Men

I never quite get it when a guy comes into the shop and says. . . "I don't need gloves" of course I look at his hands usually I notice they're dry and cracking, they're cold and worn. But he has a wonderful leather bomber style jacket, fabulous boots either western or fashion they;re stylish. He has neatly styled hair, he smells good, has a great watch, leather belt with a silver buckle etc. You know all the stuff a guy needs EXCEPT soft hands.

My question to them as it is to you.... When he takes his lover by the hand what does he think they feel? When he carresses his grandbabies face to show love what do they feel, when he carresses his child or loved one what do they feel. Well I'll tell ya what they feel... sandpaper.

Lotion and a nice glove would go a tremendously long way when delivering that carress.

Then there is always that "finished look" discussion.

For example: The attorney, business man, David Letterman and your boyfriend that has the Black Silk suit with an overcoat and a sporting a leather brief case jumping into his BMW ... no gloves. Same guy opening the door to a restaurant or the Lincoln Center for his guest, barehanded.... the next gentleman same scenario opening the door with a stunning pair of italian leather gloves on...you see that and you immediatley look at the man's face knowing that HE is special. Not to mention his guests are with a man that is unique.

My man, he's a freelance cameraman, he uses his hands, he hauls a big heavy camera around, pulls cables throughout the convention floor, fixes the generator etc. Do you think I want his scrappy hands on me after a full day? Heck no he wears his work gloves, then cahnges to his Carolina Amato cashmere gloves when we go out to dinner. He also has has his dailywear iphone gloves they have the patented technology, (as honored in MAC USERS magazine) that allows you to not have to remove your gloves to operate his phone.
The important thing is that he's protecting his hands not only for me but because he USES his hands in his job.
This is my big thing about Why Gloves! Can you imagine being without a hand or having a hand that is damaged? I'm fairly certain you would cherish the one hand you had left!
So. . . I always say "Go Ahead start a new Glove Affair!

Derby Day

Ah, The Kentucky Derby a fashion day that rings through the minds of many. The jockeys wear their best, the horses adorned with hair products, incredible gear, matching colors for their rider and then there are the spectators. The female fashion often seen at the Kentucky Derby is not solely a product of modern times; rather, opulent feminized dress has played a large role in the history of the Kentucky Derby. For a well-to-do late nineteenth and early twentieth century woman, a day at Churchill Downs, especially on Derby Day was an opportunity to be seen in the latest of fashions. What would these women have worn? Perhaps surprising to some, local Louisville women would have had the opportunity to purchase dresses and accessories from a talented group of seamstresses. The dresses in the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century would have emphasized a slimmer bustled silhouette than those of years past. The length of these dresses would have assuredly been long, covering the ankles. Due to the fact that the Kentucky Derby is in the spring, silks would have been a good, warm weather choice. Gloves, hats, and perhaps a parasol were also appropriate choices as well. In the 21st century the hat and gloves were still very much in fashion. My Glove Boutique

It all started in October 2008, well it really all started in 2005. Not that I'm bitching but I got married and thought I was going to go that way BUT that didn't happen. So, as many of us do, we pickup or socks and get on down the road.
That road led me to trying to find a business that I was passionate for, yes for not about. However now that I'm well into a glove boutique. . . I AM passionate for it.
I opened with more than 100 different styles of gloves from those that are hand made leather gloves from Italy; Sermoneta Gloves to those that are made in China gloves supplied from a couple of US fashion companies.
In a 300 square foot shop located in a charming and quaint group of shops in Breckenridge, Colorado. My new sign hung outside and it was my 50th birthday. Happy Birthday tome and Hand and Glove!!
I thought to myself that many women are just retiring and I'm starting over. That thought spawn several feelings.

Yes I did all the research, where to put the shop, where to get the gloves, how am I going to survive the move after 30 years in one place. All that due diligence and research took a little over a year. That being done there I was in my tiny little glove boutique Hand and Glove just waiting for the customers.

October of 2008 is the day that my heart and mind was opened to humans from all parts of the globe that proceeded to share with me their stories of their "glove affairs" and from that time on I knew that gloves were profoundly more special than I had originally thought. I knew they were the ultimate accessory and I knew they were warm and necessary at certain times of the year. But never in my projections did I know that I would meet such wonderful people. So, here is my blog to share some stories, some pictures and some history of GLOVES
